Firstly, what are the rules regarding towing a caravan?
These rules change depending on when you passed your test. If you passed your driving test before 1stJanuary 1997 then you can drive a car and tow a caravan with the combined weight up to 8,250kg. If you passed your test after 1st January 1997 then the combined weight you can tow is 3,500kg. However, you must check your car’s handbook to ensure it is suitable for towing this weight.
Things to remember:
- Speed limits are different – 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways.
- You cannot carry passengers in the caravan whilst it is being towed.
- Your number plate must show your car’s registration and also light up at night – check this before you set off.
- Your driving should change to suit the circumstances, so take corners slowly, allow more time for everything including breaking and more room when passing.
- Try to keep your caravan as light as possible by packing heavy things low down near the axel towards the front, medium weights in the middle and your lightest things towards the back.
- Make sure you’ve got the right insurance to cover your car and caravan.
- Remember your towing mirrors and stabilisers if using them.
Finally, enjoy your trip! The journey to your destination can feel like a drag, but try to enjoy it. Plan your stops so you know where you can have your picnic or which pub you are heading to for lunch. Alternatively, book some overnight stops where you can enjoy a break from travelling and appreciate your home from home so that the journey feels like part of your holiday!
